Climate change is one of the rapidly growing and attention-seeking security challenges for human in the 21st century. The extreme climatic events such as wildfires in Australia, California and Brazil, storm Ciara, Denis and Jorge in the UK and floods in Indonesia, Iran and Madagascar at the beginning of the year 2020 raise the fears of climatic disasters around the world. Pakistan also records heavy rainfall in the monsoon season this year which revealed the faults in the infrastructure of ill-planned cities like Karachi and Lahore.

Continuously deteriorating climatic conditions pose a great threat not only to human life but also to other animals, forests and marine habitat. several parts of the world experience extreme temperatures, risk of droughts and floods has increased, oceanic ice is rapidly melting resulting in rising in sea levels. The recent wildfires in Brazil, Australia and California, storm Ciara, Denis and Jorge in the UK and floods in Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan and Madagascar have not only cost many precious lives and billions of dollars but further damaged the environment.

Pollution is one of the major problems not only in Pakistan but all over the world and developing countries, in particular, major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Karachi, Lahore and Beijing have topped the list of the world's most polluted cities. This is due to lack of waste management in the cities, dense urban population and emission of CFCs due to increased usage of the automobile, ACs and industry have contributed to land and air pollution.

Other big cities also project the same picture. Nothing has been done to recycle the waste due to which the garbage dumps keep on multiplying, creating various environmental and health problems.

Deforestation is an issue that needs to be addressed instantly in the country. According to estimates the forest cover of the country is below 5 per cent and it keeps on decreasing due to the massive cut down of trees to fulfil the needs. For example in KPK and Gilgit Baltistan due to the increased inflow of tourists the demand for accommodation also increased and to fulfil that demand people cut down trees and farming lands to build hotels, restaurants and guest houses.

This results not only in the consumption of natural resources more rapidly but also due to the destruction of forests the chances of flooding increases leading to high risks to human lives.

The international community through agreements like the Kyoto Protocol, the Copenhagen Accord and Paris Agreement has pledged to cater to the issue by restricting the ratio of carbon in the air. Harsh climatic conditions have already started taking a toll.

Even though UN organizations, governments, activists and NGOs are trying to create awareness through various channels among the masses regarding the urgency of the issue but still there is a long way to go to get desired results. It is time for all to contribute to the cause to ensure life for the next generation.
